Body Image……not a topic a lot of people in joy talking about.
But, I think it is something of important, there for it should not be ignored; ever.
So, what is body image?
Body image is how you see yourself when you look into the mirror, or how you even picture yourself in your mind. All of this encompasses:
1) what you believe about your own appearance ( this includes memories, assumptions, and generalizations).
2) how you feel about your body (including height, weight, and shape).
3) how you sense and control your body as you move. How you feel in your body, not just about your body.
You, as a person, could have a positive, or a negative, body image.
A Negative Body Image includes: a distorted perception of the shape of your body (like the picture at the top), that your body size and or shape is a personal failure, you feel ashamed about your body, and you feel uncomfortable in your own body.
A Positive Body Image includes: a true perception of your shape, you appreciate your natural body, you feel proud, and your feel comfortable in your body.
Now, the reason I find this topic to be so important, is because of eating disorders, and people just getting surgery to “fix themselves”
Boys and girls have problems with the body image, and it isn’t something to be ashamed about, but it is something to talk about. A lot of people just have the wrong role models, or they don’t have any.
Now, a big piece of the blame, I would say, is the medias fault.
When you see ads like this:
It can really mess with a girls mind.
Then, a few weeks ago I was listing to iheart radio and there was an ad that states, “Hey if you don’t have the bikini body you want, go and get surgery!”
Now, Really people!
Why aren’t people saying, “If you want it, you need to work for it”. That was what I was taught growing up with anything I wanted to buy, and I just applied it to my body.
We should be telling people to work for what they want, and definitely not telling people they aren’t beautiful unless there skinny; because come one, that’s just plain wrong.
Working out, and exercising, is the way to go, 100% of the time.
